¿°ǾΣψMike's Modded Computers 16 September Vista 64-bit28 Februar 64 Bit linux Box for CheapI already have: a decent steel AMS case, lots of fans, power-supply, one memory chip, monitor, an ASUS, AGP gForce 128meg video card and some other crap. I chose this particular mother board since it would accept the older components like AGP Cards. When you get a new Motherboard for new hardware, just watch the cash fly out your wallet. This project is on a tight budget. I'm making good use of computer junk I already have laying around. Most every thing is all left-over stuff. A Kick Ass Modded Case for Dirt Cheap. I had added up what a premium up-grade for THING and I was about $1,400 which is cash I don't have. The photos do not do the paint justice. Needless to say, this is a LINUX BOX. Linux too complicated for you? Then you must be an Idiot. Which version of Linux? Mint KDE Any modern version of Linux will run on 64 bit systems. 21 April PC Linux OS 2007 I've installed PCLinuxOS2007 on several computers now includung this Dell 1100 Inspiron laptop.
I keep track of new Linux distrobutions on www.distrowatch.com
This is really a slick, well developed desktop system with reasonable multimedia capabilities.
I still like MS Windows including the Vista Beta. Vista is kind of a pain with all the security warnings. The eye candy is good. it's multimedia is great. I love watching the MAC Ad's on TV.

05 Januar openSuSE 10.2 is a great Linux Distro I've installed openSuSE 10.2 on THING. So far I'm fairly happy with it.
I prefer KDE over knome since knome is so damn plain.
I really like Linux but I get frustated over how difficult it can be to work with.
I'm glad SuSE has brought back their package installer for installing non-suse applications.
I would like to install my favorite 3D games as I understand there is now an add-on for Linux to run some of these games. If anyone knows more about this then please post a response to this.

20 Dezember More on My Linux BoxI've been too busy or too lazy to finish my building my 64 Bit Linux box.I have downloaded Vista and several distos of Linux. I keep an eye on distro watch for new operating systems. I really like Linux though I'm still use XP Pro for about everything. I finally came to a decision on what to do with the case window on my box.I'm skipping the blowhole and am installing a window with "modders mesh". The case will have only one dual cathode, UV and Green, since that is what I already on hand. The fan for the processor is a nice colored chrome fan. The case is to be painted dual color, blue and red. I'm whacking the case window this weekend. L8R ~Mike~ 14 August 64 bit Linux BoxChris & Mike are building a cheap 64bit Linux box.
We are re-cycling as much stuff as we can.
I found a cheap motherboard and processor at www newegg.com
It accepts the older AGP slot video and 3200 memory.
I'll post some more as it arrives.
of course the case will be modded.

11 Juni Joysticks & Battlefield 2 I've tried for a long time using my Logi-tech trackball for fly aircraft in Battlefield2.
I've gotten pretty good but I could not seem to do well on bombing and strafing runs.
I had to run my mouse sensitivity all the up to evade enemy fighters, but this made it too touchy for bombing and stafing.
So I got a Saitek CYBORGEVO Joystick from newegg. I really like it. It's very well made. All these years with computers and this is the first joystick I've ever owned.
It's taking quite a bit of getting used to but I've been playing Operation Cleansweap in Single player so I can get some practice in without getting nailed by those hot-shots on-line. Most all of these players on BattleField 2 are excellent.

29 Mai I've found the love of my life?AKA "sweetheart scams". I've just started using Yahoo chat again. This helped with the "singles thing" as I get a lot of women browsing my profile and they can just start a chat with me. This is just entertainment. Who knows I might actually find a girl I really like. Some girls are real people, just wanting to chat and maybe even meet some new people. Here is a cute little con artist who claims to be from Nigeria. That part I believe. She claims to be American but is working in Nigeria. Her photos are a very cute girl, claiming to be 30. As you can see the photos are of a very pretty girl. Of course anyone can browse female or male singles and save any photo they want. They can even rip parts of their identity so the profile will come closer to checking out. Any really great lie ever told is at least 1/2 truth.
She has saved most of the money for her trip to be in the arms of her new lover and is only short $500 to buy the airline ticket. If I email her travel agent, she will be in my arms, ready to make sweet love to me. (sic) She only chatted with me 3 times and she is ready to breed? "She dreams of being in bed with me"? She just knows I would be good in bed with her? Now guys really do get stupid when the blood flow reverses from the big head to the little one. I know. I've lived with this affliction for my entire life. Fortunately I can remain skeptical, even when I'm "excited". Wow, I'm that hot or is she that hard up. She wants a 50 year old guy? Or is it my checkbook that makes her nipples hard? She verifies my compliance by asking me to shut off my profile "so other women won't bother me". I think I'll keep it on for the next one. I saved the wrong chat last time. I've re-set my yahoo to save all chats now. I want you to see how the dialogue works. 5/29/2006 CST 2:19 PM. She is back, here is our "lovers chat"
See my whole artical I've written at http://www.moddedcomputers.com/yahoo_scams.htm
09 Mai Phuk SATA Drives I've finally had my last crash due to a failing SATA Hard drive. I've had a pair of Western Digital Raptor 10,000 rpm drives. When in a stripped RAID array or alone they are fast as lightning. However the drives or the siimage chipset on my ASUS motherboards is at fault.
Update 6/11/2006 I've had my SATA drive plugged in just for making copies ov DVD's. I crashed again and I was not even using it!! I booted, cleaned it up a bit and defragged it. I't back up and running OK. I know now more then ever that I cannot trust it. I'll just keep using it for Dycrypting DVD videos.
My Screamer has been stable for over a year now with an ATA/133 drive. THING also has an ATA drive installed.
I'll keep one on line for decrypting DVD's but I'll never install an operating system on one again.
I hope the new SATA II standard is better.
As soon as 64 bit Operating systems and hardware get worked out a little better, I'll buy VISTA and build a big, bad ass machine. I'm sure that at least least a year or more will pass before all that new technology gets all hammered out. So far I'm not impressed with the current crop of "dual core" processors.

05 April Fun with a Razr Phone The one thing that I found appauling about cell phones is all the crap they sell you that should be free.
They charge for the application then charge you again to download any images or screen savers.
I'm posting free images on my site, along with FREE, "blue screen of death" screen saver for Motorola cell phones with large screens. It's 176 x 220 pixels. I use Micorgraphifx drawing and photo magic to make these. I think any good photo program can make an animated GIF with a transparent background.
So far i have three tiny pages, just for cell phones.

20 März Fun with my Razr I got a new Razr Cell phone. It has 32 channels of TV.
email, web browser, video camera, mega-pixel camera.
I've recently down loaded an application which alllows COMPUTER FILE SHARING.
It's like most desktop sharing applications. You browse any folder on your computer.
It's fairly quick, considering how dog ass slow most cell phones are on the web.
So far, I've had a bunch of fun with my new cell phone, both playing with it and bragging about it.
All of my friends are completly disgusted with me.
My only complaint is the software package that I paid extra for, really sucks bad.
It refused to recognize the correct phone model. It refused to update until I tried leaving the phone plugged in then hitting update. Windows XP does not recognize the software as "XP Certified".
The only way it will update is if the phone is turned off, after you connect the USB to it. The media gallery and utility is the best feature but it is also the software that wil refuse to load into the menu. I finally have it running on one computer, but not not another. So much for this "World Class Software". www.bvrp.com SUCKS BAD
Cell phones now have all these little rip-off applications for wallpapers and ring tones. They charge for the "application" and charge again for each file. What a crock!.
Now that I can connect dirctly to my phone, I just make my own ringtones, wallpapers and screen savers.
I'm working on a BSOD screensaver now. Most screen savers for cell phone are just animated gif files.
I always like the Blue Screen of Death simulation screen savers in LINUX. So I'm making one for my phone.
It's done, I've posted it on moddedcomputers.

12 Februar BattleField 2 Rules I might get something done on my case mods, if i was not so busy playing Battlefield2.
With that link, you can look me up and see which server I'm on.
Just type in my handle moddedcomputers.com or Chris's handle bulletsponge7777777 and join us on that server.
This game is what Counter Strike wants to be. You have to have a pretty decent machine with a hot graphics card to play. I have an ASUS ATI Rage 9800XT with 256megs of video ram. My computer, "THING" has a 3000 Barton core, dual LAN, 2.5 Gigs of 3200 Corsair XMS Ram.
I'm happy with my computer and the game.
To see what it's like go to Google Videos
I play a lot on WindyCityGamers.com

31 Dezember Computer Case Mods I've assembled some of my computer case mods on one page.
This is only part of them.
I have actully created quite a bit of stuff for custom built computer cases.
Case modding is an addiction.
27 Dezember FarCry and Battlefield2 Now that THING is stable, I've re-installed FarCry.
All it took was some new memory
It's a great game with good graphics and fast game play.
Battlefield2 is a great game too. I'm impressed with how well it plays on-line.
Here are my Stats
I have the new Quake4 and it's not bad.
They re-cycled the Quake 2 theme and it's running the Doom3 game engine.
I'm little disappointed but I like playing the game.
See my games page.

22 Dezember THING and Windows OEM THING has been running well. The memory was the problem.
The chip it's self was defective. This has been the first time I've registered Windows.
I have found out what really happens when you don't register XP Pro OEM.
It simply switches to multi-user mode and has the registration window pop up before it will allow you access to your desktop.
Recently I could not access the Windows update site but still was able to still get all the security patches by setting the updates on AUTO. However you still only have 30 days or your locked out of your desktop.
30 days is enough to work on hardware issues. I did not mind re-installing when I was having problems.
I had re-installed Windows a dozen times or more, not being able to determine what the hardware issue was.
Now that I have it fixed, then it's no problem.
This is a hassle if I want to upgrade a hard-drive.
Oddly enough LINUX was more-or-less able to run just fine, even with the hardware error.
I still have an install of LINUX on another drive, but I need to fix the boot loader.

05 Dezember Opps, BatMan got FRIED Mike pulled a real dumb move.
I checked a fan plug while the computer was running.
I saw I had not connected it and plugged it in.
That fried the whole motherboard.
Oh well. Mabey next year Curtis will get a PC
At least I can salvage the black case for my old 450.
21 November THING fixed? I had always had a stability problem with THING. In fact I've never registered Windows XP Pro OEM. I've never had it remain stable enough to complete 30 days without problems.
Seems like it would always hangup on sounds during game play.
My experience has taught me if you have a sound problem, check the video.
I found one basic problem. I've always been a big fan of Corsair XMS Memory.
However Corsair makes more then one! I found I had mixed two slightly different sticks installed. Each required a slightly different voltage to run correctly. I've removed the offending memory stick and have been playing Battlefield2, non-stop.
Another problem I've noted with any memory stick with a heat sink can interfear with having the chip properly seated!! When you press the chip into position, it's typical to stick in the top or the bottom first, then press the other side in to place and listen for the snap. Even with both clips snapped properly, the chip STILL MIGHT NOT BE SEATED CORRECTLY. I've had chips fail memory test or even fail to boot when it was not seated correctly. in each and every case, the clips were in place.
Another thing seemed to be the ATI Rage drivers for my ASUS-ATI 9800 Video card. This time I'm running only the stock Windows Drivers. I will install the new Quake 4 tonite. We will run this game long and hard to see if it will crack.
See my link about memory on my page. http://www.corsairmicro.com/memory_basics/153707/index.html

08 November Battlefield2 A friend gave me a Battlefield 2 disk set.
So far, I'm pretty impressed with the gameplay.
It takes a good system with a HOT video card.
My ASUS Radeon 9800 256 performs well.
I have an older Gforce 128 card in my other machine and it is just not enough.
At some point, I will update THING with an AMD64 Processor and a new Mother-Board.
31 Oktober Media Computer CompletedWell I moved THING back into the basement, where she belongs. I setup Windows on a small 40Gig drive, and partitioned my 250 in 1/2 to store media files.
To my suprise, I've noted that the reception is clearer. That must have been the proximity to all the cables and gadgets. I've switched all my cables to shielded and I'm using good quality splitters.
I have recored a few shows and used some DVD creating software to edit and make a Movie DVD.
After you take out the commercials, you might get two movies on one 4.7 Gig DVD.
So far, I'm happy with the rig, despite the cheap TV card and cheesy software it came with.
With some DVD editing software, I'm able to create DVD's with a menu. I've recored some shows and movies. I'm able to remove the commercials and this creates chapters. Next I'll try a menu with short video clips.
Thing is one heavy ass tank to be packing around. No LAN parties unless I'm hosting them. I have Windows and SuSE installed and finally got the grub loader fixed. I re-installed Doom3 and Resurrection of Evil add-on for Doom3. I'm so happy to be playing DOOM3 again..
~Mike~ 19 Oktober Media Computer Stage 3 I'm ready to get started on my "Media PC.
I'm ready to add yet another hard-drive to THING.
I'm using a mobile rack to hold the drive.
I'll start on this project this weekend.
